ATR Automation has been providing industrial automation and electrical engineering solutions since 1956. As we have grown with the development of our community over the last 60 years, we have become the trusted name for industrial automation software in the region.

Our story

Starting out in a small office on the west side of Cincinnati, brothers Jim and Joe Murray, both electrical engineers, founded ATR in 1956. They worked as local representatives for companies that were early innovators in industrial automation. They built up relationships with local manufacturers during the development boom of the 1950s and 1960s, slowly evolving into a full-line distributor as the beginnings of computer technology first evolved.

From electrical switches, fuses, and push buttons, industrial PLCs and meters, to becoming the first Wonderware distributor in North America, ATR has always kept on the forefront of current technology.

In the 1990s, ATR helped transform manufacturing automation in our region through our partnership with Wonderware—the HMI visualization software that would go on to be used in more than one-third of the world’s industrial facilities.

Over the last sixty years, ATR has grown from being a parts distributor to be a full automation solutions provider, employing over twenty employees, with state-of-the-art training facilities, a wealth of technical expertise, and a portfolio of the most advanced industrial automation software available.

Now a third-generation family-owned business, we owe our success in the industry largely to our longstanding relationship with our customers. From key national and multi-national manufacturing companies, to vital local water municipalities and hospitals, our team has always strived to develop an intimate knowledge of our customers’ infrastructure, automation requirements, and goals. It is this mutual trust that has allowed us—for the last three generations—to help our customers grow, keep them up to date with the best technology, and ensure they succeed in their projects for decades to come.
